Principles of Multi Level Marketing (MLM)

MLM is a way of selling products rather than an industry.
Unfortunately many people that sell MLM product see it as a "get rich quick" system. Many products that have been launched via MLM in the past that have not had good reputations. Worse than that, people who have been involved in MLM have damaged their reputation because they have targeted their friends and family in an effort to achieve the sales required to make money from their business.
Having said this, there are also many great examples of MLM brands that have become household names around the world, and have become income generation sources for millions of people whilst providing valuable products and services to consumers. Brands like Avon, and Tupperware have become household names that we all recognise and value as quality brands.

I believe there are 5 guiding principles for building a successful MLM business:

1. Join a committed and professional team - The beauty of MLM is that you have an upline. These people become more successful if you are more successful. When you decide to join an MLM business make sure you are joining under a team of people that will help you to succeed.
2. Make sure the product is something you would personally use - if you wouldn't use it, why will others? A product that is truly useful and adds value for people is easy to sell.
3. Make sure there is plenty of resources available to help you to succeed - Do they provide training materials? Do they offer sales coaching? Do they provide online sales tools and resources?
4. Make sure you can promote the product online - you want to have a large sales territory. Why limit yourself to your local area? Look for a product that is being sold globally. Ideally don't limit yourself to a product that must be sold face to face.
5. You are part of a team, leverage the expertise of others - A professional team works together. For example, if there is expertise within the team to generate leads, leverage that expertise. If there are strong sales people within the team, utilise their skills to develop the sales skills of others.
